Robert Vaught (Bob) became Superintendent of the DeTour Area School District on July 1, 2018 bringing him back to his roots since his graduation from DeTour High School in 1984.  During his time as a Raider student, he participated in Football, Basketball, Track, and Baseball as well as attended the Sault Area Career Center where he received a certificate in welding.  Upon graduation, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Enterprise as a Naval Aircrewman.  During his Naval career, he visited 30+ countries and all 50 states! 

 

In 1989, his Naval enlistment came to an end and Bob moved back to DeTour with his family.  Here is when he began his thirst for being an educator when he coached football and substitute taught in DeTour Area Schools. He enrolled at Lake Superior State University and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in History with a French Minor and an Associates degree in Geography. He received his teaching certification from Michigan State University in 1995.

 

In his career as an educator, Bob has taught Social Studies at Greenville Middle School and expanding his coaching repertoire, leading and supporting his student athletes in football, baseball, track, and wrestling.  His enjoyment for coaching took him to Southeast Missouri State University to coach football and while there, he earned his MA in Educational Leadership and Supervision in 2003. 

 

His career took him then to Marshall Public Schools where he held positions of Teacher, Principal and Coach from 2004 – 2014.  He became the Deputy Director and then Director of the Michigan Youth ChalleNGe Academy and Michigan Job ChalleNGe Program from 2014 – 2018.

 

In his career as an educator, Mr. Vaught has experience as a classroom teacher, coach, building administrator, Curriculum Coordinator. His experiences in a variety of areas in education continue to ground him as an administrator and he continues to place his young learners at the center of his work.

Bob, currently lives with his dog Moose on Sweet’s Point near DeTour, and has wife Susan Fox currently living in Marshall Michigan, son Eric lives in Indianapolis, IN, Daughter Caitlin lives in Marshall, MI with her husband Austin and two children Weston and Hudson.  He enjoys boating, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, travelling, and other outdoor activities.
